Discover Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill

Tucked away in the Cambridgeshire countryside, Anglesey Abbey is a truly special place where history, nature, and art come together in perfect harmony. Once a 12th-century Augustinian priory, the site was transformed into an elegant Jacobean-style country house around 1600 and later became the home of Lord Fairhaven, whose vision shaped much of what visitors enjoy today.

With 98 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, a historic house brimming with character, and a charming working watermill, Anglesey Abbey offers the perfect day out for visitors of all ages. Whether you're interested in Britain’s past, appreciate fine art, or simply love strolling through peaceful gardens, there’s something here to capture your imagination.

Explore the Gardens

The gardens at Anglesey Abbey are a highlight in every season, thoughtfully designed to delight visitors all year round. In winter, the famous Winter Garden comes alive with striking colours and textures, leading you through a stunning display of snowdrops, witch hazel, and coloured bark. As spring arrives, the grounds burst into bloom with daffodils and tulips, while summer brings lush green lawns, flowering borders, and a beautiful Rose Garden. Late summer and early autumn are filled with vibrant dahlia displays—a must-see for any flower lover.

Take your time wandering along the grand avenues lined with statues and rare trees, or relax by the water features dotted throughout the grounds. There’s always something new to discover with each season.

Step Inside the House

The house itself is a treasure trove of fine art, antique furniture, and a fascinating library. Restored and styled by Lord Fairhaven in the 20th century, it was designed to impress—blending comfort with grandeur. Each room tells a story, showcasing stunning tapestries, vintage décor, and carefully curated pieces from across Europe. Walking through the house feels like stepping back in time, offering an insight into the life of a gentleman who loved to entertain, collect, and preserve history.

Visit Lode Mill

Nestled within the grounds, Lode Mill is a fully restored watermill that dates back to the 18th century. Still in working order, the mill offers a fascinating look at traditional flour milling. It's a great stop for families, with demonstrations and displays that bring the process to life—kids (and grown-ups!) love seeing the waterwheel in action.
